So you've got your website listed in the directory but are finding that:

  • Your listing is getting lost on the second, third, forth page or even further.
  • You do a search for your site using the search box and your listing doesn't show up....

How can I increase the exposure of my website?

Here's a few tips...

Directory ranking

Increasing the ranking of your listing in a directory category can only be accomplished by doing one of the following:

Search results

More and more people are using the search box located on each and every page of the directory to find relevant listings and when the search box is used, your ranking in a directory category doesn't mean much.

Here's where your title, description and keywords make all the difference...

When someone does a search using a search box, listings are found based on the following order: description(very important), title(important), keywords(less important).

It's very important that you pay specific attention to your title and description.

While your description might look OK if you're using the directory, it might not be seen when a visitor does a search.

The only way for your website to rank near the top in searches is to make sure you are including as many relevant keywords in both your description and title as possible.

Take a real good look at your title and description, if it says "I'm a really good Realtor", "we have the biggest store on the Internet" or "we sell the most", ask yourself when was the last time you typed these types of words in when you performed a search? Probably never, so why would you expect visitors to type them in.

Wanna rank at or near the top in searches??

Here's what to do...

  • First, fill your description with as may keywords as is possible in 200 characters or less. Do you sell property in California? consider a description that says you sell property in "this" area of California and include the type of property you sell, condo, homes, etc.

Here's a down a dirty example

"Selling homes, townhouse, condo's and commercial property in the Huntington Beach area. Offering a fully line of services for home buyers and home sellers in southern California. (you get the idea)"

  • Secondly, take a good look at your title, write a short and to the point description and don't forget to include keywords here as well.
  • Thirdly think about keywords. Use any type of phrases and keywords that you think people would use in a search.

In closing, I would suggest that you take 10 minutes or so and look over your listing and make the changes if you think it's appropriate.

Some of the websites listed in the directory are getting 100's of hits per month, why, because they took the time to think about the content of their listing.

Oh and for goodness sake, don't think by making your description ALL IN CAPS you'll get noticed either, firstly for those of you who don't know, it's seen as yelling and second, we don't allow it.

Finally, an inexpensive way to get noticed in searches is to purchase an ad campaign and use banner advertising. You select the keywords you think people might use in searches and we'll taylor a campaign to make sure your banner gets seen on every relevant search.
