Once Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S. people banned
together to try and help those in desperate need of food,
water, shelter, and all other types of help. The VA
recognizes that help is still need for these disaster
victims and has a new plan to help veterans who were victims
of Rita and Katrina. If you are a veteran who was a victim
of hurricanes Katrina or Rita, and reside in the state of
Mississippi the VA may be able to help you.
The Mississippi
Developmental Authority has developed a grant program to
help homeowners in their state. Grant money is available to
help you rebuild or fix your flood damaged home if you are a
hurricane victim. Some of the facts about the program
include:
- You must be a homeowner in the state of Mississippi.
- Your home must have undergone flood damage from
hurricane Katrina or Rita.
- You can receive up to a maximum of $150,000 from
this grant program.
- You can only receive money for flood damages to your
home that are not covered by your insurance. The VA and
The State of Mississippi may also require the deed to
your home to state that you have full flood insurance on
every structure that is on your property.
- You must agree to bring your home up to code for any
requirements for the current standards of construction
of new buildings.
- You must also agree that from now on you will
constantly maintain flood insurance on your home in the
amount sufficient to repair all damages in case of flood
problems in the future.
- You may have to have your lender also sign the grant
agreement.
There may be additional requirements from both the VA
and the state of Mississippi. For more information on
the Mississippi grant program for hurricane Rita and
Katrina victims go to the
VA's page for more information.
